Institute: Mercator Ocean
Role in MiTHO:
My role in the MITHO project is to develop with my colleagues at Mercator-Ocean the representation of zooplankton functional groups in the ocean ecosystem model SEAPODYM (Spatial Ecosystem And Populations Dynamics Model) and to study the potential impact of several stress factors, notably heat waves and ocean acidification. Zooplankton are a key part of the food web that supports all larger organisms, from small pelagic fish to whales. It is also essential in the cycling and storage of carbon and CO2 in the deep ocean. Zooplankton modelling requires three dimensional fields of temperatures, marine currents, solar radiation and primary production provided by numerical models that integrate satellite observations to improve their accuracy.
